Germany 1944

Profile
Name:
Jake Newbury
Rank: Sergeant
Role: Sniper in the American Army
Current Location: Heading back from behind enemy lines after killing off ample high list targets.
Age: 21

Two days had passed, two very long days of hiding in the mud, pretending to not exist. Two days pretending he was dead. Two days of mourning the death of his partner, James. Jake Newbury was one of the youngest men chosen for the elite service in the American Army. He'd endured some of the longest training known to man before being flown behind enemy lines to undertake some of the most secret missions known to man. He had no contact with the outside world, just a rendezvous point and a date.

That date was today, and the rendezvous point was two clicks to the south.

With no eyes, it was fucking difficult to get anywhere, and the coldness of winter was looming. Jake knew he had little and less time, and so despite the small wound on his left hand side, he was jogging up the lane in full gear. He had to make it, or he'd get left behind. He'd promised his Ma and Pa he'd be home, he didn't know when, but he promised them he'd come home. Promised Victoria that he'd come home and the world would be a free place when he did. Nothing was unreachable to the young man, you simply had to push yourself to achieve.

It was another three hour run over horrendous terrain before Jake saw the camp, the sun was coming down quicker than he liked, but with a last push he was there in twenty minutes, dropping the hood of his Ghillie suit and calling out to the guard the relevant information for admittance to the camp. He'd been welcomed back with open arms, almost a hero. But there was still too much work to do.

"Who's in charge here? And where do I find him?" Jake asked the man on guard, and after being pointed in the direction of Captain Andrews, Jake had made a beeline for his tent. Saluting his superior, Jake put down the sheet of paper, slightly covered in mud, but legible. "All targets have been taken, sir." Jake informed the man.

"And Corporal Brake?"

"Dead, sir." Jake managed, pushing away emotion as he took out his partners dog tags and lead them on the desk between him and the man with him. "I took too long in my shot and it cost Corporal Brake his life. It won't happen again." Jake explained, he knew it was simply a thing that happened, but he wanted to be sure Jimmy's name wasn't tarnished, it had been Jake's fault, and his alone.

"And you, Sergeant?"

"In need of medical attention, sir, but it's nothing severe, I can be ready to go tomorrow morning if necessary." Jake replied, not even blinking at the notion of going back in to the field.

"I'll see what we've got, Sergeant. Report to the medical tent first, I'll find you when I need you." The man insisted, and with another salute, Jake left heading straight for the medical tent. It wasn't anything too bad, just a graze from a stray bullet. Could have been much worse. Entering the tent, Jake merely stood, taking in the scene before him with a look of slight... well, horror at the amount of men led... dying. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes, Jake waited to be notice, a mantra in his head telling him not to be sick.

This was war, people died.

But even knowing that Jake felt a little nauseous, but with his eyes closed, it helped slightly. "Can I help you?"

Female voice... Opening his eyes, Jake took in the nurse before him. "I... just need someone to take a look at..." Jake lifted his Ghillie suit and shirt to show the somewhat deeper than he played it, would to his side and she nodded, motioning him to the nearest bed.

"I'll just get someone who specialises in this to come and look." She told him once he was sat down, and Jake nodded, pulling off the suit and straightening out his shirt, he was soaked to the bone, but he could sort that when he got to his bed space for the night, now he just needed some bandages and then he could get on.

Attire when not in the field
Attire in the field

Profile
Name:Sofia Clement
Alias: Marilyn Caldwell
Rank: Captain
Role: Spy for MI6, sent as 'assistence' to the American Army, is really supposed to be investgating rumours the the Americans have been infiltrated. Sniper.
Current Location: Germany
Age: 21

It had been a slow day, despite the chaos of war, and Sof- Marilyn was losing her patience. These American pigs kept pulling her away from missions because she was 'too pretty' or 'a dame' and it was getting on her nerves and in her way. Today she'd punched a cadet out cold for suggestive comments. It was no secret that she was beautiful or that she did very well taking care of herself in the middle of war, but it was also no secret that she was the most skilled killer in the forces, which stung the American pride. Best asset they had was a woman. From England.

A small internal smile came at that thought, though nothing disrupted her poker face. Though there was another internal emotion when she was called to the medical tent to treat a soldier just arriving. Jake Newbury, the nurse had said. This kind of thing was far under her rank but Marilyn didn't say anything. She could treat bullet wounds and the nurses were already overwhelmed. The Captain understood the struggle and was willing to help them as long as it didn't interfere with her duties.

"Sergeant Newbury,"
Marilyn acknowledged, walking up to him witha kit, "I'm Captain Marilyn Caldwell, I'll be seeing to your injury, tell me what happened," Her voice sweet but steely and professional, taking in his apparent state. After judging him capable enough she pressed a wet cloth into his hand on the uninjured side and instructed him to wash his face after removing his suit and shirt so she could tend to his wound, stemming the bleeding with a chamomile poultice first.

Jake didn't have to wait very long for someone else to come, but in all honesty the woman before him was definitely not what he was expecting. Dressed in military uniform, but tending to the wounded, didn't make much sense, but if she was competent, that was all he really cared about.

"I'm Captain Marilyn Caldwell, I'll be seeing to your injury, tell me what happened,"

"Not sure if you mean the mission or the injury, ma'am." Jake replied, taking the cloth in his right hand and dabbing at his face. He could feel some grazes there, but nothing to bother him. Cuts and grazes happened, he could deal with those. "The wound is from a tactical retreat, ma'am. Heavy fire from the Nazis had me having to run for cover. Lucky shot caught my left side, but it's nothing too bad, I hope, ma'am." Jake explained, deciding that if she meant the mission she'd ask.

Jake's eyes never met hers, he knew better than to mess with the women in these tents. His Ma had told him many times that any woman in the war was to be treated with the upmost respect, and the woman before him was a medic. Nothing better than a medic in these situations, he believed.

But as she touched his side, Jake grimaced, biting his lip for a moment before he spoke again. "Captain Andrews wants me back out tomorrow, that'll be possible right, ma'am?" He asked, finishing dabbing his face and reaching for his bag as she worked, slipping out his cigarette box and a light. "You don't mind if I have a smoke, do you? Haven't had one in three days?" He asked her, putting the stick between his lips but waiting for permission before he thought of lighting it.

"Not sure if you mean the mission or the injury, ma'am."

"Injury, and it's Captain, not ma'am, I'm not your mother, sergeant."
Caldwell replied calmly, simply reminding him before letting him explain the injury. Examinining it closer let her draw the conclusion that he would be more weakness than help in heavy combat though.

"No stiches needed, no shrapnel to remove, just a bandage to stem bleeding, but no, Sergeant, you will not be going out tomorrow. You're staying here overnight and all day tomorrow, then I'll take a look at how the wound is developing, right now we need to make sure no infection sets in."

"You don't mind if I have a smoke, do you? Haven't had one in three days?"

Marilyn didn't even need to look up she held her left palm up under his mouth for him to drop the cigarette into.

"Not in here, Sergeant Newbury, I'm sorry, but some of the men in here have severe smoke or gas damage and smoke is probably the last thing they want to see."
taking it and the box to prevent temptation. Her right hand still held the poultice and after setting the cigarettes beside herself she began the wrapping around his upper body.

"This is going to hurt, so I suggest you distract yourself. Some men like talking or humming. Personally I find the humming annoying so I'd be grateful if you'd prefer talking."
The Captain put on a small smile, one she used to put patients at ease, by far not anything to compare her genuine smile to, but it served its purpose and was natural looking.

"Injury, and it's Captain, not ma'am, I'm not your mother, sergeant."

"It's an army term, captain, but as you wish." Jake replied, it didn't matter to him what he called her so long as he got the help he needed. The analysis on his wounds was enough to know he was going to be okay. Jake had worked that out himself, it wasn't bad, in his opinion at least.

But the knowledge he would be staying made Jake's face fall. Call him mad but he wanted to be in the field, making a difference in the effort. "A whole day? I'm not sure Captain Andrews will be happy with that, Captain. It's just a scratch..." He insisted, shaking his head slightly, but in honesty he knew nothing about medical processes.

Things got worse, however when she took his cigarettes away, whilst he didn't smoke heavily he did find the odd one or two helped settle his nerves. But Jake didn't try his luck. "I want those back, Captain. It's not often you get such luxuries." He told her, meaning it as she continued on to tell him that he should keep talking whilst she did her job.

"Where are you from? I'm from Minnesota. I'm going to guess you're a Brit. Army?" He asked, grimacing at her actions as he spoke but not making too much fuss.

"A whole day? I'm not sure Captain Andrews will be happy with that, Captain. It's just a scratch..."

"Captain Andrews is smart enough to know when a soldier is of use and when he's a liability. A whole day, be glad it isn't more, but to send you out tomorrow would do more harm than good, and you don't want to be a liability."
She explained, eyes focused on the wound and not bothering to meet his gaze, knowing he'd have to accept it.

"I want those back, Captain. It's not often you get such luxuries."

"I'm quite aware, Sergeant, you needn't worry, I'm certain come morning in two days I'll see you huffing and puffing away like the big bad wolf."
A wry smile snuck into the reassurance of her words as she wrapped him in the bandages.

"Where are you from? I'm from Minnesota. I'm going to guess you're a Brit. Army?"

"I am English, and yes."
True and false. Well. Partly true and false; Sofia was half French. But since she'd grown up in England it wasn't quite a lie.

"And what did you do before the war, Sergeant?
" She asked to distract him, noticing his discomfort grow as the wrapping became somewhat tighter, moving it to wrap between his shoulder and neck for stability, the smell of perfume growing slightly stronger as she had to lean forward.

Jake had merely sat with his jaw clenched as she informed him that Captain Andrews wouldn't be putting him back out for duty the next day. The longer he sat around the less Nazis he was picking off. He disliked the notion of that a lot, but wouldn't think about calling out the stupidity of her worry over a mere scrape.

But he didn't quite hold his tongue as she called him out of the smoking. "I don't huff and puff, Captain. Merely one for the nerves. God knows we need all the stability we can get." He muttered, though he doubted any of the nurses in this tent would believe the horrors of war beyond the camp. Dying men was one thing, but she wouldn't know how it felt to be there.

"And what did you do before the war, Sergeant?"

No surprise in the English, the accent gave her away much to easily. "I was heading off to University the day after the war was announced. But with the news being given, I turned to the Army sign up and instead of heading to-" A small grimace as the Captain pulled the bandages tight. "-to Harvard the next day, I was on a bus to camp. Three weeks there and then I was being deployed. Sniper squadron." He explained, though the Ghillie suit would have been a give away.

Jake ignored the smell of perfume, everyone knew the penalty of messing with the nurses, and Jake didn't much fancy standing ass naked in the parade square all evening. Tempted as he might have been, since joining Jake had had one focus, and unless the person was a Nazi he had little and less interest.

"Do I have to stay here, or can I just come back in the morning for a once over?" Jake asked as she finished the bandages. "I'd rather go and get some clean dry clothes, if you don't mind, Captain?"

"I don't huff and puff, Captain. Merely one for the nerves. God knows we need all the stability we can get."

Well, he had no sense of humour. Marilyn resisted the urge to comment. People coped with trauma in different ways, he seemed to cope by shutting off somewhat. It didn't bother Marilyn really, she wasn't here as a nurse, for all she knew she might never see him again, just as she'd possibly never see anyone in this camp again. She had a mission and that was her focus. However the spy had an act to keep up. Sofia didn't care, Sofia was for all intents and purposes a trained assassin, cold and unfeeling. But Marilyn was suppossed to seem harmless, efficient and competant but not overly threatening. Flirtacious and soft.

Ugh, the act made her want to gag.

But she nodded when he told her he'd been set for Harvard before signing up. Not drafted then. Bloody patriots. But Harvard meant he was smarter than the average bear.

"Do I have to stay here, or can I just come back in the morning for a once over? I'd rather go and get some clean dry clothes, if you don't mind, Captain?"

Finishing the wrapping she snapped her fingers and another nurse came to her side and Marilyn told her to get the sergeant fresh clothes to change into, turning back to him then.

"Sergeant Newbury, you do realise that if you aggravate your injury further you will not only put your life in more danger but those around you. You are spending one night here, your bandages will be changed in the morning, unless the wound opens in the night and bleeds more. I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but some things can't be helped. You will be out as soon as possible." With that she motioned for him to get changed into the clothes that had been brought along with the soup from dinner.

"Eat up, then Nurse Roswell with show you to your bed and tomorrow,"
she gave him a small smile, "you will be checked again."

Jake didn't much like the woman before him, truth be told, yes she was good at what she did, but she was impractical and overplaying everything. So the sniper had simply waited for the fresh clothing and made about changing from head to toe, not bashful over getting completely changed in front of the nurses because he was quite sure they'd seen it all before. Packing the rest of his kit up - or what wasn't wet or blood stained anyway, Jake followed the new nurse to his bed for the evening without another word to Captain Caldwell.

Once settled, Jake had asked for some paper and a pen and had started a letter to his sister. Now he was back in a camp, they would be able to get word back to her, and she'd know he was okay. Though, if he could last three years out here and only get minor injuries every now and again.

Dear Victoria,

I apologise for the late correspondence, I have been away from the camp. I can't tell you where or what I've been doing, only that I'm safe and you don't have to worry about me. Say hi to Ma and Pa for me, please, and send my love to them both too.

Hopefully this finds you all in good health, I know that the fighting is away from you so I know you're safe in that respect. School is going good, I hope? I miss school so much... I've found myself doing trigonometry for fun in the field, it has a practical use in what I'm doing, which is awesome!

I'll be home soon, I hope, we're pushing back the Nazis so much each day, I don't think it'll be long now. I hope it's not long, anyway, because I miss you. Your smile. Everything. You'll have grown up so much by now...

Keep smiling!

All my love,

Jake.

After finishing the letter, Jake had put it in an envelope and sent it off with the courier. After that, Jake had settled down to sleep, better to sleep it off now. Jake managed to get a good rest in too, and before he knew it the sun was coming up. Gently pushing himself up, Jake had noted the small wash basin, mirror and razor that had been left out for him and moved to wash. It had been a short while for Jake to shave cleanly and wash properly, but by the time Nurse Roswell came Jake smelt much nicer than the previous evening.

Once she'd finished checking the wound, sterilising it once more and redressing it, Jake was dismissed. So slipping back in to his uniform, tying his tie and placing his beret in to position, Jake headed towards his commanding officers tent.

"Good morning, sir." Jake greeted his commanding officer, saluting the man. "Ready for orders and redeployment, sir."

"I'm sure you are, sergeant." Captain Andrews replied, taking out a folder and handing it to the younger man. "You have four targets, heading in to Frankfurt. You'll be behind enemy lines once more, so once you leave here you'll be on your own." The Captain explained, and Jake nodded in response, flipping through the folder of targets. Commanders mainly, no big names, but he knew that taking these people out would weaken the forces enough to get the nerves shaking.

"I don't have a partner, sir." Jake reminded the man, taking the four pictures and putting them in to his pocket, placing the file back on the desk. He had maps, he didn't need any more information, because in the face of capture he didn't wish to have anything he didn't need. A face and a bullet was plenty.

"You'll take Captain Caldwell with you."

"Captain Caldwell..?"

"Yes."

"But... that was the medic who treated me, sir."

"Indeed it was, Sergeant."

"She's female, sir."

"Is that a problem, Sergeant Newbury?"

"Forgive me, sir, but women aren't allowed in the front line."

"Technically, no, but Captain Caldwell will be joining you, Sergeant." Captain Andrews insisted. "Now, I suggest you don't stand around idle. Captain Caldwell is waiting for you in the armoury."

"Sir." Jake responded, saluting the man and heading off to the armoury. Once there, Jake had picked up his rifle, and more than enough ammunition along with a few grenades and a pistol. He'd moved back to the semi-automatics, picking up one and strapping it to his Bergan. After filling his bag with everything he needed, Jake waited outside the tent, lighting up a cigarette and waiting for his new partner.

This, was going to be interesting.

The next morning Captain Caldwell dressed in her combat clothing, her weapons already properly stowed and ready to use in a split second, not to mention her hidden spyware... Her seperate mission was to gather as much intel as possible whilst at the German camp and pass it on to her English commanding officer.

When she'd been informed she was to be paired with Jake Newbury she was skeptical. He seemed somewhat too unstable for her liking and his injury made him an easier target. Noot ideal. But she was a brillant sniper and thus competant enough to succeed despite him.

It wasn't personal, and she wouldn't let her doubts or skepsis show. But they were there. That in mind she walked out to meet him and there he was, both punctual, which was vital.

"Sergeant," She nodded, with a small smile, "Are you ready? Good," she handed him the binoculars, "You'll be spotter first."

When Captain Caldwell had joined him, Jake had simply acknowledged her with a soft 'Captain' and followed her lead to the nearest truck. Once inside they would be moved to a six mile safe point from the city, from there, they would be going alone. Jake stood on the back of the truck all the way with the mounted machine gun, scanning the area as they moved.

It was clear though, amazingly, so they had little to worry about. For that, he was thankful, but he never let his guard down. He knew better than that.

When the truck finally pulled up, the sun was beginning to go down in the sky, and after dismounting and pulling his Bergan in to place, Jake had began the move towards the city, rifle at the ready and eyes always alert.

"I suggest we move to the wooded area atop the hill to the South of the city, Captain." Jake suggested, she might be a higher rank, but until he knew her capabilities he was not going to change his usual method. She had, after all, given him the role that held the lead, he would call the shots, he would locate targets. Control was his in the most part. "We'll set up a camp for the night, and we'll gather intelligence from the vantage point. No shots fired until we're sure of any patrols and the amount of fire we could possibly come under." He continued, they would both be skilled in hand to hand combat to be on this mission, but Jake wanted to make sure they were on the same wavelength.

"Anything you want to add?" He continued, checking the area down his scope and then moving on again.

The voyage in whole wasn't the worst she'd ever been on, by far, things seemed to be working pretty smoothly. All the more reason to be wary. Eyes sharp, taking everything in, scanning automatically for imminant danger, Mari listened to him with one ear and nodded, the plan sounded safe, same thing she wouldve done if she were just an army sniper. Of course, Sofia would've been alone and thus more able to rely on stealth.

And she'd given him the position to be spotter for a reason. She trusted her shot more than anybody elses and this way she could see how good he was.

"Anything you want to add?"

"No, Sergeant, I agree."
She said, walking on with an expressionless face.

Soon they were both setting up camp and dividing watches, Mari said she'd take the first watch and so she did, gathering intel for the army, but even more detailed intel for England, which she secretly kept hidden.

Once they'd agreed on the approach, they'd both worked quickly and efficiently to set up a small camp. Jake had set up a his roll mat beside Captain Caldwell's, not bothering with anything extravagant, in case they needed to move quickly. They'd only spoken to agree to take turns in watch that evening, and with the knowledge he could sleep first, Jake hadn't argued. Setting his semi-automatic next to his sleeping space, ready for use, Jake had fallen asleep easily.

He'd slept soundly for a couple of hours, before waking to the sound of an owl nearby, and after taking a moment to rub his eyes and get adjusted to the darkness, the young man had rolled over, finding the woman led beside him looking through her binoculars at the nearby town.

"Anything interesting to note?" Jake asked, taking up his own binoculars and looking around the town. "You can sleep now, if you want, I can take over for now." He added, they both needed to rest as much as possible to be of any use. "Tomorrow we'll move in, if we have enough information."

There was no point waiting it out, they had two more towns to move on to before they could head back, and Jake would rather be back sooner rather than later.

Taking the first watch Marilyn did her job vigilantly, taking in every detail she could see whilst Sergeant Newbury slept beside her, not even noticing the time pass until he awoke and she listened to him, eyes still on the sight, until he took the binoculars.

"Anything interesting to note?"

Mari filled him in briefly on what she'd observed, all patterns and anything that seemed relevant, nodding at his suggestion. Her main mission was in the next town over; weapon plans from the enemy. Special new designs that could tip the scales either way, depending on who had them. The agent had already worked out that she'd tell Jake her target was top secret so he wouldn't ask questions. The woman didn't have to be told twice that she could sleep, so she scooted to lay flat and within five minutes she was asleep, soundly and gladly. Every ounce of sleep counted.

The next time she was awoken it was for the day and the woman was quick to be ready.

"Anything happen?

As the hours ticked by, Jake could see the general patterns. Guard posts were changing every hour and a half. They all took the same route. There were very few people in the town - or what was left of it anyway. And their target was little and less in to movement - or so it seemed from the hour in which the man had been up. Made their lives much easier.

"Anything happen?"

"I've seen more than enough men taking a piss behind the barracks this morning, and our target has enjoyed a rather close shave this morning." Jake told her, lowering the binoculars with a small cheeky smile. "But, the change over is constantly an hour and a half, there don't seem to be many there at all. Should be an easy job." Jake told her, going in to his bag and passing her a packet of biscuits.

"Breakfast." He added, not wanting her to go hungry. "Best not to shoot on an empty stomach. Other than food, nothing else is going to delay us, the conditions look great." He told her cheerfully, as if talking about a round of golf rather than the sinister truth of what they were about to do.

"Alright,"
She pushed her hair back with a tie for shooting and stretched her arms and shoulders. But Marilyn was curious as to what he constituted an 'easy' job, his skills today would be the test for her to see if he would be capable of having her back tomorrow.

Taking a biscuit and eating whilst she checked her weaponry, and soon it was time, "Let's get this show on the road, then," She smiled as they moved into position to get the job done.

Watching Marilyn get ready, Jake took up the binoculars and checked the surrounding area for their main target. The window to the kill was closed. Which meant noise when it was shattered by the bullet that would go in to the targets head. Which... ah yes, a guard beneath. Jake lowered the binoculars and looked across at the Captain beside her. "I think we might be able to get away with minimal kills. I have two shots that must be taken, and a further six to make a rounded job of the whole thing."

Pausing as she munched on her biscuit before getting ready, Jake waiting for her to finish and set in to the task. "Okay, when you are ready, the building with the clock tower, second floor, third window." Jake told the woman beside him, using the flag on the roof to check the wind. It was dead, prime time for shooting. Sweeping back to the window, Jake did a rough calculation on the height. "If you're aiming for his head, aim about a head's distance above to accommodate distance. Fire when ready."

It was only a few moments later that the trigger was pulled, Jake didn't jump as the sound echoed, watching the bullet fly through the man's head. "Kill confirmed. Quick move to the front door, same building. Guard watching. Same allowances. Fire when ready."

Again, the shot was taken.

"Kill confirmed."

The process continued throughout the whole town, Jake picking the targets, confirming the kills and giving the desired adjustment. Captain Caldwell shot well, and once Jake had confirmed all Nazi soldiers to be downed, he lowered his binoculars. "Well done, Captain. Let's get moving." Jake told her, rolling from his mat and attaching it to his bag, taking his semi-automatic and trudging off through the woods, eyes alert.

They walked for half an hour in silence, and when Jake was quite sure they weren't going to be caught, he relaxed marginally. "You shoot well." He told her, sincerely meaning it. She hadn't missed a shot which was impressive. "Where did you learn to shoot like that?"

Their job came and went, Mari hit every target perfectly, listening to Jake when needed and always concentrating on what she was doing. There was no regret, no emotions, Marilyn was unfazed by the kills; it was her job, nothing else. If anything this felt good, being useful. Doing what she was best at. Once she'd been asked what kind of person that made her, if killing people was what she did best. She hadn't answered.

After walking in silence for half an hour before he spoke, and then her character came into play.

"You shoot well."

"Thanks."

"Where did you learn to shoot like that?"

Showtime. "My father was an avid marksman. I learned from an early age. Pistols, crossbows, rifles. I've always been a good shot. When the war started he used to joke that if the troups sent me to the frontline the war'd be over in five minutes." She laughed softly, a soft expression before sombering. Pretending to gather herself she took a deep breath.

"I'm going to need your assistence tomorrow, Sergeant. Jake. There are documents I've been instructed to intercept, they'll be inside the main building. Once I'm in I can handle myself. But I'll need you to cover me getting in. Andrews said you would be the best for the job, it's strictly confidential, I don't even know what exactly is in what I'm retrieving."
Her features furrowed slightly in concentration, "Can I trust you to not let me get captured in a German camp?"

The story of where she'd learnt everything she knew today brought a fond smile to Jake's lips. Himself... Well, before the war he'd never picked up a gun, but it had come naturally, so naturally he might have been worried if his commanding officer hadn't told him it was a good thing. "So you're vastly dangerous then." Jake joked softly. "But at least you're on my side, I guess!" He added a moment later. Sure, she could kill him in his sleep, but that wouldn't get them anywhere.

Unless she was a spy...

Or as the next part showed, she was an undercover agent working to intercept information. Did Jake want to know what? Yes. Was he going to ask? No. He knew the importance of secrecy, and he didn't pry. "I can do that. I'll have to scope the area before you go in, and we'll need to agree your route in and out, but I can do that, no problem." Jake replied, his voice full of confidence. He didn't miss that Captain Andrews had put him forward though.

"Can I trust you to not let me get captured in a German camp?"

"You can rest assured that if that should happen, as unlikely as I believe that would be, I'll be coming in to get you, Captain. You won't get left with the Germans under any circumstances." He assured her, noting a vehicle moving on the road just ahead. Without a second thought, Jake took hold of her arm and pulled her down in to a nearby ditch, holding a finger to his lips to tell her to keep quiet.

"They really couldn't have gotten far..." The sound of German voices rang in the air and Jake shifted just enough to see two German soldiers. Looking back to Marilyn, he held up two fingers to say how many he'd seen. Then motioning to her as whether to stay still, or to shoot them, he waited for the orders from his commanding officer.

"You can rest assured that if that should happen, as unlikely as I believe that would be, I'll be coming in to get you, Captain. You won't get left with the Germans under any circumstances."

"Thank you." Marilyn replied, "We'll plan more tonight at cam-" She cut off instantly, just as he did, though she hadn't banked on him pulling her down, she thought as they rolled into the ditch, her landing on top of him, but not moving for fear of being heard.

"They really couldn't have gotten far..."

Two soldiers then. And Jake waiting for command. She could tranquilize them, it'd be silent, but it'd raise questions in Jake. Shooting was too loud, the vehicle would hear. So best option was wait, and that was the signal she gave him. Luckily the two passed without noticing them, though it felt like forever. And the two were so focusedon trying to hear for them that they didn't even notice how close they were until the danger had passed. Letting out a sigh of relief had brought Marilyn's attention to the fact that she could feel warm breath brush her lips that was not her own and she'd carefully gotten up, brushing herself off.

Eventually they found a safe place to put up camp where they could see the next site. It was around six o'clock and they'd already discussed where she'd be going and their various plans. Now there was nothing left to do but think, really. They'd gotten lucky that this was a very rocky area and for a change they were able to sleep and camp in some sort of cave, able to look down at the target area.

Jake hadn't expected for her to fall on top of him in that moment, but he was much too hung up on the moment on getting out alive. When he was given the command to not attack, Jake just sat quietly, straining to hear the soldiers. It seemed, however that they were not going to be found and a few, very long moments the sound of the vehicle moving on met their ears.

Jake let out a very soft sigh, his eyes moving back to Captain Caldwell's only to realise how close they were. Thankfully though, she'd moved before it could get awkward, and Jake carefully for back to his feet, scanning the area and setting off again.

It didn't take much longer for them to press on to the next site, and it took only a little longer to set up a base in a cave they'd found before they were scouting again. Jake had made a small sketch of the area so he could learn it when they retreated back in to the cave and once the Captain was happy, Jake sat a short while longer, rifle in hand making the required calculations for the next day. Only when it was starting to get dark did Jake head back in to the camp they'd made, having just enough time to strip his rifle down, clean it and put it back together for the next day before the light had all but gone as Jake settled under his blanket.

"Captain..." Jake whispered through the darkness, making sure to keep up with the use of her rank when he spoke to her. "What were you going to do before the war broke out?" He asked realising he hadn't asked her when she'd asked him. There was no way he was going to sleep now, so he would talk until she told him to shut up.

"Captain..."

From her space under her blanket Marilyn opened her eyes curiously, "Yes, Jake?"

"What were you going to do before the war broke out?"

Well, that took her by surprise. She'd not expected him to ask anything personal. She'd asked him, yes, but she hadn't expected him to want to know. Well she wasn't going to tell him the truth, that's for damn sure. At least, not the whole truth, but as Marilyn knew, the best lies had grains of truth hidden in them.

So she scooted closer until their legs were grazing each other, so she could whisper and not risk giving them away.

"I'm from one of those old families, you know? Yes we were modern in the way that my interests were encouraged, like shooting. But in the end I was going to do what we always do. Settle down. Plan dinner parties. Buy things I neither want nor need. In a way I suppose the war saved me from that, because this is what I want to do. Sick as it sounds,"
Her voice was soft and her breath warm, he could certainly feel it from how close they were. In the darkness she could just make out his silhouette and face.

With Captain Caldwell, Marilyn, moving closer to him, Jake glanced around them despite himself. Honestly, he wasn't quite comfortable with why she wanted to come closer, but it... well, with her being so close, it was almost a comfort given the scenario. Women hadn't been a luxury they were allowed during the war, and three years was a very, very long time.

But her answer provided a distraction and Jake listened attentively. Old family... well, that meant money, might explain how she was in the field unlike any other woman. But the notion of settling down - at his age... Jake screwed his nose up at the thought. Though, in fairness right now he had bigger things on his mind than whether or not he was ever going to get married.

"Does that mean they didn't..." Jake paused as her breath brushed his lips, realising just how close she was to him. Closing his eyes for a moment, Jake continued. "... find you someone to settle down with?" Jake managed, not sure where that had come from. He doubted any sane man would let his fiancé in to the field, it would be working against the point of an engagement, but he could ask.

Mari shook her head slightly, "Well, I suppose they did but I never met him. Didn't even know his name. Then the war started right after, so I enlisted instead of getting married." Lie, but oh well. It worked. "War changes things," she mused softly, "What were once sins of the flesh become excusable ways to keep sane, uncommon behaviour becomes tolerated, all that."

"But that was a long time ago. No use dwelling on anything except the right here, right now. Can't change the past, can't guarantee the future...

As euphoria hit both of them, Jake rested his head on the woman's shoulder, breathing heavy with his eyes closed. Silence was a virtue in these moments and they'd managed undeniably well in their efforts. Jake had placed a soft kiss on her neck as he came down, rolling gently on to his side and pulling her blanket over the two of them before pulling his own roll mat and blanket closer so they didn't have to move away.

"Call me Marilyn,"

Jake nodded, reaching down to pull his trousers back in to place, helping the Captain with her own. "Sorry, C- Marilyn." Jake murmured, pulling his shirt back on before he got cold. "Habit." He added in explanation to what he was apologising for. "You know... you're quite beautiful, I'm a lucky man." Jake told her, reaching for her shirt and offering it to the woman. Once she'd gotten back in to it, Jake put his arms around her, not really thinking about what he was doing. Though if she asked, he would merely say he was cold, his hands would testify to that.

"Good night, Marilyn." The sergeant whispered through the darkness, settling down for the evening because they had a busy day ahead of them.
