A Storm Abrewing (Jake+Mari) Empty
PostSubject: A Storm Abrewing (Jake+Mari)   A Storm Abrewing (Jake+Mari) EmptyThu Jul 03, 2014 9:53 am

Marilyn had added Jake Newbury to the list of people allowed to apparate into her apartment without being zapped by her countless protections. The list consisted of herself, Azalea and Jake. That was pretty much it and that was good. The fewer the better.

Marilyn paced up and down her apartment anxiously, she couldn't wait any longer and had sent a patronous to Jake reading "Come over. Need to talk." After the attack on the schools and even more students missing she had grown increasingly frustrated with the sheer lack of...everything. She was an Auror in Training. But it wasn't ENOUGH. She felt like tearing at her hair in frustration. This couldn't be all the wizarding community had to offer. She knew it wasn't. And she had an idea.  But she needed help with this one...

Then she heard the telltale pop and whirled around to face him. She knew she looked...better than the last time they'd been face to face. She looked physically healthier, though still heavily scarred.
"Jake!"

The days were slowly growing warmer, and with each day passing Jake's hope that Azalea was coming to grips with their news was getting closer. He hadn't expected a quick fix, nobody could, but the witch... seemed to be okay. Jake would simply stay the rock she needed, as he always did, because what she needed was the most important thing in his life. There wasn't anything he wouldn't give her if she asked him.

The sight of a patronus, however had been unexpected as Jake entered the flat after training. It had taken a few moments to put the message to a name, and after eating his dinner much too quickly, giving Azalea a kiss in thanks and promising to not be too late, Jake had apparated to Mari's flat.

Totally forgetting the time differences and being at least seven hours ahead.

Meaning sometime in the early hours of the morning when Jake arrived. Everything was still light, however, and the Quidditch star didn't have to wait long to see the person he'd been called by. "Mari!" Jake replied, smiling warmly at the witch before moving across the room and giving his friend a hug. "It's been a long time! I'm really sorry! How are you? What's so urgent?" He asked, hoping she was okay.

The hug was a surprise. To put it lightly. Marilyn was still not used to physical affection. Well, any affection. But it was definitly better than it had been. So while she initially stiffened slightly, eyes a bit wider than usual, she did relax into the hug a bit and even patted him on the back in what could be interpreted as fondness.

"Jake, it's good to see you, I'm glad you came I need to discuss something with you. Sit down." She offered him a seat on the couch and sat on the armchair opposite it, leaning forward, elbows on knees, her expression serious as usual.

"I need your help. Don't worry, I'm fine. Well. Anyway. I just- There have been more and more attacks. We can't just sit idle by. I thought that starting Auror training would help and while it does help there is only one student beside myself in training! She is the only one besides me to pass the first lesson! It's just- who is supposed to save those kids that were taken? Who is going to stop the Black Widows?" her voice rose in frustration, her voice scratching in the process, and she worried her lip a bit before continuing in a more hushed tone, "We need to do something. I know in times like these there needs to be an organized group. We all read about them in school, The DA, the Order of the Phoenix. We need that now. And I need your help to make that happen. What do you say?"

When Jake was offered a seat, he took it gratefully, undoing his Meteorite's tie a little and looking at the witch before him seriously. He hadn't noticed anything wrong in the hug, because for a long while now, Azalea had been often the same.

As the speech came, Jake listened, stunned in to silence as he listened to the girl's worries. The Quidditch star didn't exactly know what to say to so much information, so even after Mari was finished, he sat in silence, trying to work out what had just hit him. The news of the children going missing wasn't new, but the rest of it definitely was. Only two people getting out of the first stage of Auror training?

"Well done on getting through to the second stage." Jake offered, still trying to work out the rest of her words. He was over tired, so functioning quickly right now was a tough ask, but eventually he caught up.

"You're... asking me to help you set up a renaissance group?" Jake asked, trying to make sure he'd understood properly. "I... don't know, Mari. You're an Auror, once you finish some training you will be making a difference! I... I'm not trained for that kind of thing!" He replied, shaking his head as he tried to digest the idea. What would Azalea say if she knew? Would she encourage it? When would he have time to help Mari amongst his crazy schedule?

"I mean, I would love to find those children, get them back to their parents... But, that's what Aurors do, Mari. You know that." Jake summarised, looking to the witch for some kind of idea as to whether this was fully serious.

Marilyn shook her head, "That's just it Jake. The Aurors aren't doing it. If a bunch of students could fight Voldemort and his army and win why can't we fight the Black Widows? Don't forget History, Jake, there could be Widows in the Ministry. In all probability, there probably are! We can't rely on some higher power to step in. They're not coming. They're not.

"Have you known me to be anything but serious? I know you're not trained to be an Auror, but bloody hell, you're not incompetant. And you're not incapable of learning some new things so don't give me that. I know it's a lot to ask, but look at the world we're in. The Widows grow bolder and stronger everyday and two Aurors that just graduated aren't going to cut it. If the Order could do it, if the DA could...why can't we? I'm not saying it won't be dangerous." her voice became more somber at this.
"I'm not saying it's without risk, but nothing is. Not even the schools are safe anymore!" She stood as she spoke, pacing slightly, gesturing to underline points.
Finally she stood still, looking out the window,
"I'm not asking permission, Jake, I'm asking for help."
she turned to sit on the table that had been between them,
"We could make a difference. There's no waiting anymore. The longer we wait the worse it gets. I know people want to act. They just have nowhere to go. Things are changing, we need to act. Find people who want to help, train what needs to be trained. The Widows have spies, we need spies, too. We need people to plan, people to gather intel, people to act. There are people in higher positions that may need protecting. Escorting. We can do that."

She paused to let him respond, gathering her thoughts.

With the length of the speech that Mari was going on about, Jake was beginning to wish he hadn't come to see the witch alone. He should have brought Azalea, his mind reasoned, at least then he'd know whether it was an agreeable sentiment or not. Jake liked the witch before him, but what she was asking him to do... it was crazy.

"Mari, I dreamt about being an Auror for many years, and I didn't make it through selection. I wanted to make a difference then, and I would love to be able to contribute something now. But a group of untrained wizards against the Black Widows... The three times I've been caught in attacks, I've been lucky to get out alive. I have... someone who depends on me, Mari. I can't put Azalea through... through that." Jake tried to reason. If Mari had asked him two years ago when he'd failed his Auror training, he'd have jumped up at the opportunity, but Jake had grown up, realised that there was more to life than what you wanted.

"I don't know... I don't know what help I'd be to you, Mari. I... I'm just Jake." He added flatly, shaking his head slightly.

"That's why we should organize. Train together. And don't act like Azalea wouldn't consider it.  Because I'm pretty sure she would.  This isn't about revenge or bloodlust, jeez you don't even have to fight. You could help with organizing. Or intell." She bit her lip and shook her head, "You were lucky? No, there is no luck in a fight. You were good enough so you survived. Since when have you been Just Jake? I bet Aza wouldn't be happy to hear you demean yourself like that. Newbury, what is keeping you from this? This is a great chance to do something that could help, we could make a stand. Jake I need your help. This is gonna be pretty hard to do on my own." She ran her fingers through her hair, the motion showing her heavily scarred neck, "I'll do it myself if I have to. You know I will."

As Mari kept trying to push him, Jake looked down at his hands. Mari wouldn't understand the torments he'd been subjected to in the last few months, how much he hated being away from Azalea for longer than was necessary. But the cause... The cause was definitely something he was interested in fighting for.

"Can I speak to Azalea about it first, Mari?" Jake asked after a while, he didn't wish to acknowledge anything else she'd said just yet because it simply wasn't the best idea to make a decision right now. "I will support you if I can, but I need to speak to Azalea first. This is a lot to rush in to, Mari." The words were soft, never accusing. They were both Belladonnas, they were fighters in nature, but maturity brought with it the consequences of those fights, and consequences need to be weighed up.

Marilyn bit her lip but nodded, "I know. I'll sort out my own affairs, I'll make more plans and you tell me as soon as you know." She sat back down in front of him, "I know you want to help. I knew you would. I'm not saying rush into it. But these are not the moments to take your time, you understand." The Auror in Training looked around her sparse apartment, the only thing that stood out were the masses of books on defense against the dark arts, hexes and curses and the like. Not to mention a mildly scorched area at the ceiling from a rogue hex.
"Do you want some tea?" she asked finally.

"I can look around for helpful information." Jake replied, he had enough ties in his social circles to get information. Celebrity status was good to him like that. "And I'm not going to drag my feet, I just need to talk to a few people first. Make sure they understand."

"Do you want some tea?"

The change in topic was a difficult one to say the least, but Jake nodded a moment later. "That would be lovely, thank you." Jake replied, relaxing back in to the armchair now he wasn't being pinned down, being told to make a decision. "So how has everything else been?" Jake asked, going for friendly conversation which would be so much easier.

"I know you're not, I know. I understand" They both knew she didn't understand. But she did respect Jake. And to an extent, a larger extent by far than anyone else aside from her Grandmother, she trusted him to do the right thing.

"Right." She stood and waved her wand, summoning two cups and a kettle from where she'd had some tea keeping warm. Marilyn walked back and set his cup in a saucer before him with another wandflick.

"So how has everything else been?"

"Well. I'm still, what did they say, oh yes, 'rough around the edges'. " she scoffed into her teacup, "still have nightmares. Still think every bloke with a hood up is a Widow. Don't like going out much. I went to a pub once. The Hogs Head, you know it? Can't see the appeal anymore. It's so...mundane. Everything is. Can't imagine going about like everyone else. So I stick to the University as much as possible, training and practicing pretty much all of the time. The Professor for Stealth is..." Perceptive. Spot on. Sees way too much. "...surprising. But he's no-nonsense. I like that."

"How are you? And Azalea?"

When Marilyn said that she understood, Jake knew she was just trying to make him feel better. A small smile touched his lips at her failed efforts. She was counting on him, and Jake could only hope that he wouldn't let her down.

Reaching out for his cup when Mari started to explain how she was, Jake sipped lightly at his tea. The English brands always tasted so much nicer, and for a moment the Quidditch star closed his eyes and enjoyed the stronger flavours.

"You can always come over, Mari, if you don't want to be with other people, we can hang out." Jake offered, they were good friends, in Jake's books. Not because they knew each other inside out, but they both had the same kind of understandings. The mention of university and Auror training got his attention though. "Stealth, eh? How's that going?" Jake asked, interested in anything to do with Auror training. "If the teacher's good, I might drop in some time."

At the mention of Azalea and him though, Jake paused. "We're... okay." Jake managed, before nodding. He didn't elaborate because he and Azalea hadn't discussed as to whether they were telling others. And to be quite honest, other people didn't need to know.

"You can always come over, Mari, if you don't want to be with other people, we can hang out."

"I know. Us hanging out like this is the only thing that doesn't feel like I'm just wasting time, you know?" The Auror in training answered, sitting in her usual tensed way, ready to move in a split second.
"Stealth is good. Like I said we're only two so we've already been assigned our partner. Woman called Waters. She's very competant, a good partner to have in a battle. From what I heard the men in the class were dimmer than an old streetlight. They all failed first lesson. You should drop by, I think you'll have to speak with Professor Clement first, but he's a good man. I respect him highly, knows what he's doing, that man." Marilyn nodded soundly, taking another sip of her tea.

"Okay." Marilyn nodded, dropping the subject of Azalea without resistence. She couldn't really be of assistence there anyway, she wasn't exactly the type to know much or anything about romance. Once, perhaps, long ago.. But those days were dead and gone, all locked up in a box of her things from her Academy Trunk, her old journal from days when she'd passed the time talking to Gavin about anything and everything, dancing with Mary...And now she hadn't seen them in so long. They wouldn't recognize her if she did. It felt like a lifetime ago.
At first she didn't even notice that she'd gone a bit stiff, staring into nothing, until she shook herself into reality, "Sorry." she brushed it off quickly, "Anyway. Auror Training. Very good. I think we have good chances of graduating, Waters and I."

"Oh! How's Victoria?"

Jake listened to the explanation of the Stealth class. So only two people had gotten through... A couple of the students he'd taught flying to were going in, he wondered if they had been the ones to fail. But student confidentiality meant he couldn't openly ask. "How did they fail?" Jake asked, it would be good to know in regards to training with Mary. "And I can't drop by at the moment, I'm too busy with work." Jake replied, he wanted to, more than anything he'd love to be on that course, but sometimes what you wanted was not what you got in life.

"And you'll graduate, you always do what you want to." Jake teased lightly, though for the most part, it was true. Anyone who got out of Guantanamo... well, they were more than competent if you asked Jake!

"Oh! How's Victoria?"

"Victoria's great." Jake replied, the smile on his lips blossoming instantly. Jake was incredibly fond of his little sister, and it showed every time he spoke of her. "She can walk now. Did you know? Azalea found a cure for paralysis, and Victoria has been walking since August. Means we can't keep her sat down for long. She skips everywhere now too! Loving life as always, and she's hoping to sit her O.W.L.S a year early! Honestly, I'm so proud of her, she's done so much this year! Not to mention Quidditch! How did I forget, she joined the team as Seeker. She caught the Snitch in her last game, but her timing was wrong and Belladonna beat them on points. But she'd loving it!"

"Well from what I heard they were supposed to paint each others faces with camoflauge. And Somehow, don't ask me how, those two idiots decided to paint portraits of each other while Waters tried to actually do the assignment. I mean canvas and posing and all apparently... Professor Clement was livid. As I would have been, too." She shook her head, a part of her had hoped it hadn't been so horrible a mistake but she seemed to have heard correctly.  What was this world coming to?
"And you'll graduate, you always do what you want to."
She nodded, "Damn straight." the smallest hint of a smile on her face for just a second.
At the sheer amount of love and affection in Jakes expression and voice a he spoke of his sister Marilyn stiffened slightly, a little overwhelmed from bing confronted with the feelings she could no longer express. She was however pleased to hear about Victoria walking, last time she'd seen her...Well, she preferred not to think about that time much, her life before didn't feel it belonged to her.
"Well, that certainly is..eventful. I'm glad she's walking again, I'm sure she's excited about her O.W.L.s, why early?"

As Mari explained what has happened, Jake couldn't help but laugh at the idea of people thinking that was how they did camouflage. "Seriously?" Jake asked between laughs, shaking his head at the idea. "Well, at least they were failed, don't want morons trying to look after us now, do we?" Jake asked, still laughing to himself.

The smile on Mari's lips at the notion of her doing what she wanted was a welcome one. It was nice to see the witch crack a smile, even if momentarily, after everything she'd been through.

With the question of Victoria, Jake just shook his head and shrugged slightly. "I don't know... But you know how she is, here's a challenge, she jumps at it. I guess she just wants to prove to people she's capable, not that I think anybody would think otherwise. But everyone is behind her, so if that's what she wants that's what she'll get!"

Finishing up his tea, Jake put his cup back on the saucer. Checking his watch, the Quidditch star looked to his friend. "I think I should probably get going, it's late. I'll let you know as soon as I can, I promise. But until then, don't do anything stupid, please?" Jake intoned, hoping the witch would do that much at least, for now, anyway.

"No indeed. How they were even accepted I don't know." The witch shook her head. Shameful really, a mistake like that.

"I'm sure she will. Especially with a big brother like you to back her up. She's a strong girl. She'll do great." Marilyn nodded, also finishing her tea and looking back up when he announced that he should be going.
She stood, setting down her cup as well. "We'll talk soon. And I don't do stupid things."
Taking a deep breath she moved forward and gave him a hug, it was awkward and she was still not very comfortable with it, but she was trying. "Take care, Jake."

With the comment on Victoria doing well, Jake nodded. Victoria always exceeded, and she likely always would. It was nice to see that at least one of them would get everything they ever wanted from life, because Jake knew that he'd missed a lot of things. Victoria wouldn't have that problem though.

When Mari moved to give him a hug, Jake hugged her back gently. It was nice to see her trying, and he hoped that, when he had time, they could see more of each other so that he could help her get used to... normal things again. "I'll see you soon." Jake replied to her farewell, stepping away and then apparating back home.

With a lot of things for him to think about.
